Proper preparation and correct assembly are essential for achieving the best results.
1. Dismantling
- Leave the engine to cool down to ambient temperature.
- Open the cap of the expansion tank of the cooling circuit.
- Tap off the cooling liquid.
- Remove the bolts from the cylinder head in the opposite order of the tightening procedure.
2. Cleaning
- Clean and degrease the mating faces of the block and cylinder head.
- Clean the cooling circuit.
- Pass a threaded tap through the cylinder head bolt threads
in the block.
3. Checklist
- Check the flatness of the block and cylinder head.
- Check the liner block height.
- Check the turbulence chamber height in the cylinder head (diesel engines with indirect injection).
- Replace all cylinder head bolts.
- Check the condition of the washers (it is recommended to replace all washers).
- Check if the cylinder head gasket suits the engine (see the Elwis Royal catalogue).
- Check the height of the pistons over block level to determine the gasket thickness.
- Check if the gasket thickness is correct.
4. Assembly
- Never re-install a cylinder head gasket.
- Do not use any sealants, greases, etc. on the gasket unless prescribed by the engine manufacturer.
- Slightly lubricate the bolts in the thread and also under the
head. - It is essential to replace all head bolts when installing a
head gasket. - Tighten the bolts according to the prescriptions of the
engine manufacturer. - The re-tightening procedure must be followed according to
the prescriptions of the engine manufacturer.
